Central police engage with locals over rising crime
Some of these crimes include bogus salespeople, fraudulent prophets, common robberies, theft and shoplifting.
Central police recently conducted an awareness campaign in the CBD as part of efforts to quell rising crime.
Some of these crimes include bogus salespeople, fraudulent prophets, common robberies, theft and shoplifting.
“The other pressing issue that was concerning is theft out of motor vehicles and theft from motor vehicles,” said spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise.
These crimes mostly affect the CBD and have become far more notable in recent weeks.
“While conducting the walkabout, police took time to engage with the car guards to support the police and assist as informers, further to be whistleblowers when such acts take place,” Nkhumise continued.
The walkabout involved members of the social crime prevention team, communication officers along with the newly appointed crime prevention wardens.
Authorities engaged with the public and businesses in the CBD from Paul Kruger Square to Sammy Marks Square. Pamphlets were distributed to residents, street vendors and local businesses on the crimes.
Newly appointed acting station commander Colonel Phil Maboea said: “It is of vital importance that the station works hand in hand with all the car guards in the city.
“We also need to create a system that will assist in keeping records of people who are working on the streets.”
He encouraged the community to be more cautious of their surroundings to protect themselves and not fall victim to crime.
Residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with all the various Crime Stop lines:
– Crime-related emergencies: 08600 10111
