Tshwane police arrest 333, recover 6 firearms during Operation Shanela
On Monday, in Winterveldt, north of Pretoria, a suspect sought for cybercrime was arrested in possession of two unlicensed firearms, a replica firearm, two magazines and eight bullets
Tshwane police announced their successful apprehension of 333 offenders during Operation Shanela this week, showcasing their unwavering commitment to combating crime within the area.
Law enforcement carried out visible patrols in areas of high crime, conducted inspections to ensure compliance and raided unauthorised liquor vendors, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.
Van Dyk said during the operation, Tshwane detective teams apprehended 281 suspects, including 81 for gender-based violence, two for murder, one for attempted murder, four for armed robbery and eight for rape.
“Nine liquor outlets were inspected, resulting in the closure of seven, the confiscation of 239 900ml of alcohol for violating the liquor act and issued fines,” he added.
Van Dyk said one suspect was apprehended for dealing with dagga, and one for possession of dagga.
A total of 1 190 ziplock bags of dagga and cash valued at R4 210 were confiscated and will be destroyed upon the criminal cases being closed.
43 undocumented immigrants were detained and 76 Aarto fines, totalling R138 000, were issued during a multidisciplinary roadblock.

Van Dyk said the following day police arrested a suspect in hijacking and business robbery cases in Akasia.
“The suspect was in a hijacked vehicle and a search uncovered a 9mm pistol with the serial number filed off as well as a magazine.”
The suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of a hijacked vehicle.
Later, police arrested another suspect in Amandasig from whose home a 9mm pistol with filed off serial number, a magazine and 15 bullets were recovered.
On Wednesday, Tracker and Tshwane K9 received information about suspects in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Soshanguve.
Officers in Soshanguve arrested a suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm – a 9mm firearm – and a magazine as well as four bullets at his residence.
Another suspect in the case of robberies in four provinces after people had been followed from the bank was arrested in Silverton.
“The suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended, leading to the discovery of a replica firearm with a black magazine. He is linked to several cases.”
Throughout this operation a total of 981 individuals and 571 vehicles were searched.
All confiscated firearms will be subjected to ballistic analysis for any possible links to other criminal activities.
Van Dyk said the success of all the operations was made possible by the collaboration of multiple stakeholders, including the departments of home affairs and labour, Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police, Tracker, crime prevention wardens, Mamelodi East CPF and local councillors as well as various Tshwane SAPS officers.
