Update: Muckleneuk pipeline repairs completed

The burst pipeline had left residents and businesses in several Tshwane suburbs without water on Saturday.

Major repairs on the Muckleneuk pipeline have been completed, the city of Tshwane announced in a statement today, Sunday, August 20.

The pipeline burst had left residents and businesses in several Pretoria suburbs without water on Saturday.

“Artisans from the City of Tshwane’s Regional Operations and Coordination Department have finalised repairs to the burst pipe in the Muckleneuk,” said the metro’s spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

Mashigo said the repairs were finished last night, and water was allowed into the system from the Salvokop reservoir.

He said that full restoration of water will take a while.

“The process of filling the water network will take time, given the fact that the pipeline had run completely dry,” he said.

Mashigo added that the engineers must be cautious when pumping water into the system in order to avoid any hiccups such as leakages and/or pipe bursts.

“This means that water will be gradually allowed into the network. The City’s engineers are monitoring the network, and it is hoped that it will stabilise soon.”

Consumers in low-lying areas were the first to receive water.

“This is due to the network needing to build up enough pressure, which will lead to high-lying areas receiving water optimally.”

He said that it is important for consumers to be prudent when using water.

The city urges consumers not to water gardens, wash cars, fill swimming pools, etc, until the flow of water is normalised. This will take a reasonable time, assuming that there are no setbacks.

The following areas were affected by the water supply interruption:
• Arcadia
• Trevenna
• Sunnyside
• Freedom Park
• Part of Muckleneuk, north of the railway line
• Part of Pretoria Central/CBD, from Railway to Minaar Streets.

The city would like to express its gratitude to the customers for their cooperation during the unplanned service interruption.
