Mabopane-Pta train service resumes after derailment
Mabopane and Dewildt residents should use the amended timetable until the site has been cleared.
Gauteng Metrorail has resumed the train service between Mabopane and Pretoria following a derailment at Hercules station in the north of Pretoria last week.
Peak morning and afternoon trains at Hercules along the Mabopane and Dewildt corridor began operating on Friday afternoon.
The passenger rail operator said it has amended the train schedule for a limited time until the site has been cleared without indicating when this would be.
It also stated that it will temporarily use train shuttles to transport commuters between Pretoria and Hercules until further notice.
A commuter from Wolmerton, Tshireletso Nchupang said he is happy that the service has resumed as he was adversely impacted by the suspension on Thursday.
“As a train commuter, I don’t have to worry now about spending money on other modes of transport as Metrorail has provided train shuttles for us to use during this period.”
Thabang Mofokeng said he is relieved that trains are now operating again in Mabopane.
“Life without the train service was difficult for me and my children who also travel to school using a train. We had to find alternatives and spent a lot of money,” he said.
He said it seemed people are slow to return to trains.
“They are afraid to risk arriving at work late because of the amended timetable,” he added.
Metrorail has urged commuters to check the amended timetable on its social media platforms.
