Police recover drowned victim near quarry in Gomora informal settlement

The unknown man is believed to have fallen down 30 metres while intoxicated.

Police and emergency responders recently recovered the body of an unknown man near a quarry in Gomora informal settlement, Hercules.

The Tshwane diving team responded to the scene at 23:00 on August 22 and then hoisted down the 30m embankment to commence their search.

After searching for approximately 23 minutes, the divers found the body.

“We believe that the unknown gentleman was intoxicated at the time, under the influence of alcohol and was walking on the side of the quarry when he slipped and tumbled about 30m down into the water,” said Tshwane police flying squad spokesperson, Sergeant Legodi.

“When the diving team recovered the deceased they were then hoisted back up and the body was handed over to Hercules SAPS for further investigation.”

The flying squad, diving team and officials of the government employees’ medical scheme (Gems) were on the scene.

Authorities urged residents to organise safe transport home after drinking and never to drink in public.

Residents with any information about this incident are urged to contact their local authority.
