New ultrasound machines to improve maternal health services at Stanza Bopape CHC

The new portable machines produce scans with clear picture quality, print-out images and are expected to assist the clinic in reducing waiting time for expectant mothers.

Stanza Bopape community healthcare centre (CHC) in Mamelodi has been given new ultrasound machines to improve its maternal health services.

According to the centre, it sees more than 15 000 antenatal care patients annually including patients referred to the facility by neighbouring clinics.

The facility recently acquired two ultrasound machines as part of the ongoing concerted efforts to improve maternal health services in Tshwane.

The new portable machines produce scans with clear picture quality, print-out images and are expected to assist the clinic in reducing waiting time for expectant mothers.

Stanza Bopape CHC manager Mapitso Mokgamatha said the machines have brought much-needed quality healthcare services and will also assist in improving service delivery.

“It is the first time that we have access to high-quality equipment. It will help healthcare workers to identify high-risk pregnancies and any other pregnancy-related abnormalities as well as help in referring promptly to the next level of care,” he said.

Some of the challenges that the facility has faced are the high rate of unbooked pregnant women coming to deliver in the facility and patients who present with complications.

“We are pleading with women to go to their nearest clinic as soon as they miss their first period. Early antenatal care has benefits for both mother and baby where they are checked by a skilled healthcare professional at every visit,” he said.
