Local church hosts soup kitchen

The soup and bread were for the elderly people, youth and community members to keep warm in the cold weather.

Congregants of The Jesus is King Forever church in Sunvalley, Mamelodi West held a prayer and soup kitchen for 400 locals on Monday.

The soup and bread were for the elderly people, youth and community members to keep warm in the cold weather.

Apostle Musa Chonco said the aim of the soup kitchen was to ensure that the youth and community at large did not go hungry.

“We want to show the community that we are not just a church or an organisation that is all about words but we are here to show the community that we see that due to the impact of Covid people are hungry.

“Many companies were forced to shut down and many people who are breadwinners lost their jobs during the pandemic, while others never worked at all. As the church, we reached out to Shoprite with the help of the people and organisations like #Notinmyname to get donations for the soup kitchen,” said Chonco.

“Our main purpose was to feed and help the community and make sure that their stomachs are warm and full,” he said.

He said there was a lot that needed to be done.

“The soup kitchen was a success and we managed to feed close to 400 people.

“We had to give out of our pocket just to say thank them for coming and we still love them.

“We are reaching out also to local business people for help.”

The church thanked everyone who came on board to help, the community and NPO.

“We are looking forward to partnering with them in the future.”

The partnership was formed to relieve communities of poverty and hunger.

Chonco said the church has other programmes coming up soon and was planning to give food parcels every month end.

The leadership of young people in Mamelodi, Mvelo Ntuli said they were happy that the church hosted a soup kitchen and made sure needy community members do not go hungry.

One of the beneficiaries, Rosina Mashego said the soup did warm her up.
