Police conduct surprise search at multiple central and west schools
Police also seized knives, scissors, sharp objects and other various substances such as pills and mixed spirits (alcohol-containing prescribed medication) hidden within the schools’ premises.
Dagga, drugs, dangerous weapons and other contraband were seized during a recent surprise search operation at multiple schools by the local police stations.
The stations conducted the searches at Pretoria secondary, Tshwane secondary, Pretoria Technical high, Daspoort secondary, Hercules high and Hoërskool Tuine.

Pretoria Central police spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise said that the effort was a result of reported ongoing “lawlessness” in Pretoria central and west schools.
“The operation comes after an outcry by the schools around Tshwane, especially in the inner city, about ill-discipline, bullying, substance abuse and other related criminal conduct by learners.”
The Pretoria Central, Hercules, Sunnyside and Pretoria West police stations were all involved in the searches.
“As part of the Adopt-A-Cop, a school safety project that has been ongoing over the years, the SAPS needed to expand its operational strategy to combat crime in schools.
“This was not just a search but part of an outreach programme with the sole purpose of engaging with both learners and educators,” Nkhumise continued.
Other law enforcement entities involved in the joint operation included, correctional services, metro police, community safety and education, Proline security and the CPFs from the three stations.

Some of the other issues of concern raised by the schools included escalating levels of gangsterism, harassment and learners engaging in explicit acts.
Police also seized scissors, sharp objects and various substances such as pills and mixed spirits (alcohol-containing prescribed medication) hidden within the schools’ premises.
Tshwane CPF chairperson Themba Mlotshwa who spear-headed the operation said: “It is quite concerning how some school kids have resorted to these criminal conducts. Parents should also come on board to assist teachers as this is not only just to fight crime but to ensure that we protect our children’s future.”
Hercules CPF secretary Johan Cloete also expressed his gratitude for the operation. “On behalf of the Hercules victim empower team, we express our sincere gratitude to each member involved who worked relentlessly to help combat this drug war in our schools. We pray this to be the first of many more successful operations to come soon.”
Hoërskool Tuine is also still reeling from an incident earlier this month where a student was stabbed by another during a fight.
Police said they will engage with Tshwane commissioner Major-General Azindwini Nengovhela more on how to strengthen this operation.
