Four Pretoria North families are now homeless after their houses burnt down in two separate fires.

The first fire broke out in Danie Theron Street on Thursday just after 20:00.

The Pretoria North Sector 1 CPF said upon arrival, half of the six-roomed house belonging to an elderly couple was engulfed.

“The wife managed to escape as the fire started but the husband had to be taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation,” said CPF chairperson Jan White.

White said the emergency personnel were summoned to the scene and extinguished the fire before it could spread to nearby houses. The wife was accommodated by neighbours, he added.

Tshwane EMS deputy chief and acting spokesperson Peter Matolla confirmed that the EMS responded at 20:15.

“The firefighters extinguished the fire but only managed to save two rooms.”

He said a male patient was transported to Tshwane District Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Matolla said the second call-out was at around 00:30 on Friday and it was discovered that three houses on one property in President Steyn Street were on fire.

“It started at a thatched roof lapa and spread towards the other buildings,” Matolla said.

He said the fire was extinguished but the houses were already damaged.

“The fire destroyed everything,” White told Rekord.

White said the families are desperately seeking donations of baby clothes, food and furniture.

“These devastating events are a reminder of the importance of fire safety and of the need to support those who are impacted by these types of tragedies.”

He said the cause of the fires will form part of the emergency services investigation.

Donations of clothing, household items, furniture, beds and bedding can be delivered to 449 Danie Theron Steet.
