Art lovers enjoy 4 Schools Exhibition this past weekend

The exhibition features works of learners from four high schools.

The future of South African art appears to be in good hands as learners at four different high schools showed their work at the 4 Schools art exhibition.

The opening of the exhibition took place this past weekend at the Viewing Room Art Gallery in Brooklyn.

The learner-only exhibition featured works of grades 10–12 artists from Pretoria Boys High, Girls High, Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool and Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool.

The works for the exhibition were put on display publicly for the first time instead of being hosted usually at one of the schools.

“I think that it is a very important thing in education for these kids to have exposure to the public space… that way they can see that art is a career, it’s a career choice. It’s not just something you do at school, stay up late and get marks for but it has the potential to form your decisions as a career,” said the head of visual arts at Boys High, Debbie Cloete.

From sketches to sculptures and everything in between, residents are invited to immerse themselves in the youth’s creativity.

The exhibition is set to continue until September 9, then the works will be returned to the schools. Viewing hours may differ so those interested are encouraged to keep an eye out for the gallery’s operating hours.
