Local organisation creates 150 job opportunities

A local organisation known for its community projects has helped 150 unemployed residents of Mamelodi find a job.

A local organisation known for its community projects has helped 150 unemployed residents of Mamelodi find a job.

This was possible through a partnership between the Thandanani drop-in centre, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Tshwane Leadership Foundation (TLF).

Kate Kekana of Thandanani said it was their task to help identify 10 team leaders and 140 ordinary workers for cooking, social services, gardening, cleaning and tutor sectors.

She said the 150 will be working at Thandanani helping with aftercare and cooking as well as at local schools, pre-schools, and the Rethabile service centre as part of the EPWP for the next 10 months.

The participants will receive stipends from the IDC’s social employment fund.

Other organisations in Mamelodi given the same opportunity were Second Chance rehabilitation centre, Tateni community care centre and PatchUp.

Thandanani advertised posts and anyone could apply: from people living with disabilities, the gay community, youth and adults over 35.

The deadline was June 15.

“We received more than 350 CVs which we carefully went through during the selection process,” she said.

Thandanani’s main focus is drug awareness and cleaning up the Mamelodi community, taking care of the homeless and drug addicts and reuniting them with their families.

Thandanani started operating in 2011 to keep the youth and children of Mamelodi busy and away from drugs and crime.

It is a youth-driven, passionate and focused group of volunteers striving to find new and innovative ways to uplift their community.

It operates Mondays to Saturdays and has pleaded for more donations to keep it running.
