Wierdapark residents tackle mess

Sewerage blockage in Chris Hougaard proved a challenge as the plumbers spent almost five hours working on it without success.

Wierdapark residents tackled a back-log in service delivery constructively this weekend cleaning up and maintaining their neighbourhood.

Residents showed up with brooms, spades, gloves and masks, while plumbers volunteered their skills to unblock sewerage lines in the area.

Services such as water and sanitation, waste collection, and roads and transport have been affected by ongoing issues tied to the wage dispute between the city and its workers.

Wierdapark Residents Association (WPRA) chairperson Liza Vorster said the clean-up was a success and the effort targeted Badenhorst, Hendrik and Chris Hougaard streets, with the first two going without a hitch.

Vorster said the sewerage blockage in Chris Hougaard proved a challenge as the plumbers spent almost five hours working on it without success.

“The exco of WPRA thanks all members who have sacrificed their time to actively clean and participate in the projects. These are a first of many to come,” said Vorster.

She said in light of the service delivery issues, “we now have to step in where we can”.

Several of the sewerage leaks have been ongoing since the strike began in July and the volunteers were able to repair some.

“The Springbok-Willem Botha one is still there, as well as Chris Hougaard [large leak],” said Vorster.

Resident Francois Mellet spent time working with the plumbers on the sewerage blockages.

Mellet said that the blockage could not be cleared after four and a half hours of work, but spoke to the positivity among the residents.

“We are disappointed, but let’s give it a rest (out of the sun) and we will apply our minds again. On the very positive side… met some lovely people, neighbours and other interesting people.”

Ward councillor Marika Kruger-Muller was thankful for the residents’ assistance.

“A big thanks to HiTech group plumbers, WPRA and residents who assisted in the clean-up today. It is a privilege to work with you and I appreciate your support in the community,” she said.
