The impact of the collision between a light-duty bread truck and a horse and trailer was so great, it resulted in bread and crates being scattered across the scene.

Gough said one person each was trapped in the wreckage of vehicles and had to be extricated by emergency personnel.

“The injuries sustained by these patients were serious in nature.”

One required specialised intervention and the decision was made to call in a Netcare911 medical helicopter.

“Paramedics facilitated the required specialised treatment and the man was airlifted to a specialised medical facility.”

Simultaneously, the second person was stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care.

He said the cause of the accident is currently unknown and will form part of a police investigation.
