R80 highway spiking slowly returns

In a video doing the rounds on social media, a woman’s car can be seen with damaged tyres.

Motorists have been warned of tyre spiking on the Theo Martin R80 highway in the north.

A woman reported her tyres were spiked on Tuesday night, October 4.

In a video doing the rounds on social media, her damaged tyres can be seen.

Luckily, she reported she had not been not robbed, hijacked or worse thanks to two men in a Toyota Venture bus who stopped to help her.

In the video, the woman asks the two Good Samaritans to help her change the tyre.

Police had not commented at the time of going to print.

The following routes have been identified as spiking hotspots:

– N4 Mpumalanga to Pretoria between Solomon Mahlangu Drive and the Watermeyer off-ramp
– R80 Mabopane highway: from Rosslyn off-ramp
– N4 Pretoria to Mpumalanga between Bronkhorstspruit and Balmoral off-ramp
– N1 Polokwane N4 Mpumalanga interchange in Pretoria.
– N4 to Rustenburg between R80 Mabopane freeway and Brits Plaza tollgate
– The Golden Highway
– R21 Freeway from OR Tambo International Airport to Pretoria.

What to do when your tyre is spiked:

– Don’t stop instead, contact police, local patrol or CPF while driving slowly to the nearest safe location
– If you are stopped by a traffic officer, demand to see their appointment certificate to verify that such officer is employed by the relevant traffic authority. In case the officer fails to provide the proof, take down their patrol vehicle registration number and report the incident to the nearest police station immediately
– In case your vehicle is immobilised, remain in your vehicle, lock your doors and seek assistance
– Do not allow any person to tow your vehicle without written permission
– Should you see that another motorist has been spiked, kindly stop and give the necessary assistance
– Avoid driving in hotspot areas at night
– Do not drive over any object and if you do, do not stop until you reach a safe well-lit area
– Take note of vehicles that are following you
