Advanced retinal surgery restores patient’s sight
A successful, sight-saving retinal procedure highlights Mamelodi Regional Hospital's growing expertise in specialised ophthalmology, bringing advanced eye care to its patients.
A patient who was facing significant vision loss has regained sight following a successful specialised retinal surgery performed by the Ophthalmology team at Mamelodi Regional Hospital.
The surgery demonstrated the hospital’s growing capacity to provide advanced eye care services closer to communities.
The life-changing procedure, known as a Pars Plana Vitrectomy (PPV), was performed by Ophthalmologist Dr Baile Matlala after bleeding inside the patient’s left eye obstructed vision and prevented a clear view of the retina.
“This procedure allows us to remove blood that has accumulated at the back of the eye and restore a clear view of the retina,” explained Dr Matlala.
He added that once the blood has been removed, they can identify the cause of the bleeding and provide the most appropriate treatment.
“For many patients, it is an important step towards restoring sight and improving quality of life,” said Dr Matlala.
He stated that a vitrectomy involves making tiny incisions in the eye and using highly specialised instruments to remove blood and other material that may be blocking vision.
“Because the instruments are extremely small, the procedure is minimally invasive, often requiring no stitches and resulting in minimal discomfort during recovery. The surgery typically takes between 45 minutes and one hour, depending on the patient’s condition and any findings identified during the procedure,” He said.
According to Dr Matlala, bleeding inside the eye can result from several conditions, including diabetic eye disease, trauma, and certain blood disorders.
He added that in many cases, the underlying cause can only be fully assessed once the blood has been cleared and the retina examined.
Dr Is’haaq Suliman, Medical Officer in the Ophthalmology Department, said the successful operation reflects the hospital’s commitment to offering highly specialised eye care services.
“This is one of several advanced retinal procedures at the Regional Hospital. The expertise within our ophthalmology unit enables us to manage specialised care that is not widely available. We are proud to offer these services closer to where patients live, reducing the need for travel to tertiary facilities,” said Dr Suliman.
He added that while all surgical procedures carry some degree of risk, patients generally have good outcomes, noticing improvements in their vision within days of surgery.
Suliman said the extent of visual recovery depends on the underlying condition affecting the eye.
The procedure highlights the dedication, skill, and collaborative efforts of the Mamelodi Regional Hospital Ophthalmology team in delivering quality patient-centred care and restoring hope to individuals affected by vision-threatening conditions.
The hospital continues to encourage community members, particularly those living with diabetes and other conditions that can affect eye health, to undergo regular eye examinations.
