Tshwane appeals to residents to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day in a responsible manner
Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Fireworks Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, involving bonfires and fireworks displays.
The City of Tshwane emergency services department calls on residents to observe and celebrate Guy Fawkes Day today Sunday, November 5 safely and responsibly.

The department’s spokesperson Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso said the discharge of fireworks on private premises is prohibited within the boundaries of Tshwane.
“Fireworks may only be discharged at designated areas after approval has been granted by the Chief Fire Officer in line with Section 38(3) of the Tshwane Fire Brigade By-Laws,” Mabaso said.
He said the following Regulations make the discharge/handling of fireworks illegal:
-Regulation 9.18(d) of Government Gazette 1604 of 8 September 1972 – The selling of fireworks to a person under the apparent age of 16.
-Regulation 19.9 of Government Gazette 1604 of 8 September 1972 – Permitting children under the age of 16 to handle fireworks without adult supervision.
-Regulation 10.34(c) of Government Gazette 1604 of 8 September 1972 – The use of fireworks in a public place without the permission of the local authority.
-Section 38(3) of the Tshwane Fire Brigade By-Laws; Local Authority Notice 267 dated 09 February 2005 – The use of fireworks without the permission of the Chief Fire Officer.
Mabaso said the public can help to ensure a safer Guy Fawkes Celebration by reporting any contraventions of the above to the Tshwane law enforcement units at the following numbers:
-Disturbance of the peace: Metro Police at 012 358 7095/6
-Fire hazard at premises: Emergency Services at 012 310 6300/6400 or 012 310 6200 during office hours (08:00 to 16:00)
-Animals in distress or cruelty to animals: Waltloo or Centurion SPCA at 083 453 3863 or 082 807 5671 respectively
