Tshwane invites govt to help it get more water from east water works
Tshwane has opted to rope in the Department of Water and Sanitation for assistance in clearing the hyacinth around the abstraction point to enable it to supply more water to residents.

Tshwane has roped in the Department of Water and Sanitation to assist in clearing the hyacinth to enable it to pump more water to residents.
The residents of Region 7 have been experiencing supply problems due to a power failure at the Brokhorstspruit water treatment plant (WTP) and the growth of water hyacinth around the abstraction point.
Tshwane spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the residents of Bronkhorstspruit, Cultura Park, Ekandustria, Ekangala, Masada, Rethabiseng, Riamarpark, Thembisile Hani and Zithobeni experienced insufficient water supply due to problems at the plant.
“Due to a power failure at the plant and the high growth of hyacinth, there are difficulties in pumping raw water from the abstraction point.
This has resulted in a significant drop in the volumes of water available for purification, and reservoirs reaching very low levels, and in some cases, are even empty,” said Bokaba.
He said certain areas could experience lower water pressure to no water supply.
“To address this issue, Tshwane has reached out to the department for assistance in clearing the hyacinth around the abstraction point. By doing so, we aim to restore the required volumes of water for purification.”
He said however Tshwane could unfortunately not provide a specific timeframe for when the problem would be resolved.
“The metro will keep residents up to date on the progress and if water tankers will be deployed to the affected areas.
We understand the inconvenience this may cause, and we assure residents that we are working diligently to rectify the situation as soon as possible.”
