Closure of Mabopane and Ga-Rankuwa cemeteries as burial space expected to run out in early 2024
After the two cemeteries are expected to close in the first quarter of 2024, burials will be conducted at the Klip-Kruisfontein cemetery located near Soshanguve Crossing Mall.
Tshwane metro has announced its plans to close down the Ga-Rankuwa and Mabopane cemeteries in Region 1 owing to the sites having reached their full lifespan.
The metro said it planned to close the sites before the end of the first quarter of next year and residents will now have to use other facilities that are made available by the city.
The closure of these two facilities follows a recent city assessment, which revealed that the burial space for both Ga-Rankuwa and Mabopane cemeteries was reaching its capacity limit.
“According to the findings, the lifespan of Mabopane cemetery is anticipated to come to an end by February 2024.
This is dependent on the number of burials, should the number be higher than anticipated, the lifespan might end in January 2024,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.

Mashigo added that the Ga-Rankuwa cemetery’s lifespan is estimated to end by March 2024, however, it might also end sooner than anticipated if the burial number turns out to be high.
“The city is obligated to inform members of the public that post the closure, both facilities will cater for reburial and reopening services, as well as bookings for the erection of tombstones,” Mashigo said.
Mashigo said members of the public will also continue to have visitation rights to the gravesites.
“As and when the two facilities close, residents are informed that burials will be conducted at the Klip-Kruisfontein cemetery, which is the nearest facility that can service the surrounding areas currently,” he said.
Klip-Kruisfontein cemetery, commonly known as the Crossing cemetery, is located on the Ruth First Road off-ramp close to Soshanguve Crossing Mall.
Mashigo said the city’s environmental management department is working on identifying new plots for the development of cemeteries to cater for future burials.
