As Christmas approaches, the Tshwane metro has asked residents not to give Christmas gifts to refuse collectors this year.
According to the metro, this included money or any form of gift.
The metro said it had noted the practice with grave concern and reminded residents that they are under no obligation to engage in it.
“The city wishes to state it categorically clear that residents are under no obligation whatsoever to offer any gift to refuse collection personnel.
Residents are thus urged to report anyone who approaches or harasses them for gifts or donations in the name of the metro as this goes against city policy.
The metro it was its responsibility to collect and dispose waste on behalf of residents and businesses.
“Customers cannot therefore be charged twice for the management of waste as this already forms part of their monthly utility bill,” the statement read.
The metro encouraged residents to take a picture of any person who solicits a gift or money from them and jot down the registration number of the vehicle used, if possible, then report the incident to wastemanagement@tshwane.gov.za
“Residents must be wary of this because it also poses a risk that criminals could pretend to be municipal employees or contractors to pull the wool over their eyes.
No staff of the contractor or employee of the city should demand a gift or be given money for refuse collection,” read the statement.
