No time frame for repairs to damaged road near Menlyn Maine

Tshwane emergency services said the roadway in the east and west direction was cornered as there were concerns that a sinkhole could develop.

The Tshwane metro roads and transport department are yet to finger when repairs to Aramist Avenue, along Menlyn Maine will begin.

The route feeds into Menlyn Maine, and has access to N1 via Atterbury Road.

The road is presently damaged as a result of the recent non-stop rains.

According to Tshwane Emergency Services Charles Mabaso, on December 28 Tshwane’s stormwater infrastructure near Menlyn Maine burst, damaging Aramist road, east and westbound.

“The water main burst. The manhole blew. We are uncertain if it is as a result of water pressure.”

He said no injuries were reported.

“We have cordoned the roadway off as we are concerned that a sinkhole could develop.”

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the road posed a potential threat to road users, and was cordoned off.

“The road is closed as it is not safe for public use. The public is urged to use alternative roads.

He said Tshwane officials were yet to begin construction on the road, although a time frame for repairs had not been set.

“Discussions on a way forward in respect of reconstruction or any alternatives will be held by the city in due course.”
