Planned maintenance to affect water pressure in parts of Pretoria

The Palmiet and Mapleton systems will have their water pressure reduced on January 21, affecting large parts of the metro.

Tshwane has warned residents of low water pressure as a result of planned maintenance set for Sunday, January 21.

The metro was informed by Rand Water about an expected reduction in water pressure at two of its systems.

“Rand Water has informed Tshwane about the planned maintenance by Eskom on a transformer supplying the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant, which may impact water supply within Rand Water’s distribution network on Wednesday, January 21,” it said.

The maintenance is scheduled to start at 08:00 and is expected to be completed by 15:00.

“The maintenance is conducted to ensure compliance with occupational health and requirements,” said metro spokesperson, Selby Bokaba.

He said the pumping capacity of the Palmiet system would be reduced by 23%, while that of the Mapleton system would be reduced by 25%.

“Residents within the city’s Region 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 jurisdictions are thus cautioned about the anticipated low water pressure in the system on the said day,” said Bokaba.

He urged residents to use water sparingly during the planned maintenance.

Water leaks, burst pipes and all incidents where water is being wasted can be reported at 012 358 9999, 080 1111 556, or 012 358 9060 for illegal water connections.

– Don’t wash vehicles with hosepipes.
– Don’t fill up swimming pools.
– Install a low-flow shower head and tap aerators where possible.
– Use a dual-flush toilet cistern.
– Plant indigenous or drought-resistant shrubs in the garden.
– Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.
– Collect rainwater to reuse in the garden or wash the car.
– Cover the swimming pool to reduce water evaporation.
– Take a short shower rather than a bath.
– Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
– Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks.

Residents are urged to continue using grey water to water gardens and flush toilets. Where possible, water-saving devices should be installed.
