Centurion residents start the year on a sustainable note

The monthly recycling collection initiative has been going strong since 2019.

Centurion residents kicked the year off by doing their part for the environment with a successful recycling day on Saturday.

Centurionites dropped off glass bottles, plastic, paper, cardboard, batteries and cans along with their e-waste, such as electronics and appliances at the corner of Lenchen Avenue and John Vorster Drive.

This monthly event, which has been a consistent feature for years, has evolved into a staple for environmentally conscious residents.

Ward 69 councillor Cindy Billson and Anton Bailey from BluSwirl Recycling have been organising the collections since 2019 to help grow a culture of sustainability in the Centurion community.

Glass bottles, plastic, paper, cardboard, batteries and cans along with their e-waste were dropped off at the collection point.

Billson reported that two trailers, two bakkies, and a five-ton truck were filled to the brim with recyclable waste.

“This year marks seven years since Anton and I started this service to the community of Centurion,” she said.

While the exact amount of recyclable waste collected through the project was not available, Billson estimated that tons of waste had been diverted through the recycling initiative.

“[That is] waste that did not go to a landfill site, but was appropriately recycled, waste that did not add to water and land pollution.”

Billson said the next recycling day would take place on February 3 from 09:00 to 11:00 at the same spot in Centurion.

E-waste such as electronics and appliances were dropped off for collection.
