Van Dyk said the victim went to the shopping complex at about 20:30 to sell a cellphone.

“He went with his father because he was not comfortable to meet with a stranger alone,” said Van Dyk.

“On arrival, he handed the iPhone to the potential buyer and was handed cash inside a transparent plastic [bag].”

However, the victim’s father noticed that it was counterfeit money that was handed over.

“The buyer, upon realising that he was cornered, ran away with the money and the iPhone to a parked car.”

Van Dyk said that the father of the complainant and an unknown customer at the shopping complex began shooting in the buyer’s direction.

The buyer and another occupant of the getaway vehicle were shot in the altercation.
