Centurion learners begin their 2024 journey

Irene’s principal, Samantha Jaynarayan, told Rekord that the enthusiasm she had seen among the new Grade 1 learners pointed to a bright year ahead.

Learners across Centurion began their journey through 2024 on Wednesday morning, from learners on their first day at “Big School” to excited matrics on the home stretch of their school careers.

Nokuthula Hlatshwayo has been wearing her school uniform ever since she got it.

Nokuthula Hlatshwayo, who started Grade 1 at Irene Primary School, was so excited to join other learners after previously being home-schooled.

“She has been counting the days. She has even been wearing her uniform since we got it in anticipation of this day,” said her mom, Christina.

Other learners put on brave faces as they faced the road before them, while teary-eyed parents captured the special moments.

Kganya Makhubele from Southdowns Preparatory, supported by his dad, Rhulani, reluctantly left his boy in the capable hands of his teacher.

Meanwhile, Grade 8 learners began their high school careers.

Zibula Mgquba, on his first day of Grade 8 at Southdowns College, told Rekord he was excited for his next step to freedom at his new school.

Matric learner Wešo Mogashoa said she was going to miss her home away from home as she took her first step to the end of her school journey.
