Gauteng among best-performing provinces in Class of 2023

Tshwane South district flies the Capital City’s flag high, finishing third nationally.

Gauteng has has come out trumps obtaining phenomenal matric results in the Class of 2023 with Tshwane South district third best in the country.

The province notched both first and third places in the best-performing districts table in the country with Johannesburg West occupying the number one slot and Tshwane South third.

The Johannesburg West district scored 92.5% and Tshwane South 90.4%.

This was announced by basic education minister Angie Motshekga on Thursday evening when she released the matric results in Randburg, Johannesburg.

Motshekga said the National Development Plan (NDP) recognised the districts as the crucial interface of the basic education sector in identifying best practices, sharing information and providing support to schools.

“The continued growth in the performance of districts is closely monitored and evaluated by both the provincial and national basic education departments.

Reports on the monitoring and evaluation oversight, and the analyses of the performances of schools, which are normally presented at the quarterly meetings, continue to assist and enable districts to reprioritise their support and intervention programmes.”

Motshekga said out of the 75 districts in the country not a single one got a pass rate below 60%, describing that as a great achievement.

The matric class of 2023 achieved an 82.9% pass rate, up by 2.8% from 80.1% the year before.

“Only one district in the country performed below 70% while 19 performed between 70% and 79%, and 55 at or above 80%.”

She said the top 10 districts were composed of three provinces – Free State, Gauteng, and KZN.

The number of bachelor passes increased, to 40.9% up from 38.4% in 2022.

She said of the 715 719 full-time candidates that enrolled to sit for the national senior certificate (NSC) exams, 572 983 passed while 182 056 part-time candidates enrolled and 897 775 actually took the exams.

She said KwaZulu-Natal, overtook Gauteng into second spot with a pass rate of 86.36% from the 83.0% in 2022 pushing Gauteng into third at 85.38%, up from 84.4% in the previous year.

Free State continued its dominance as the top-performing province, achieving 89.3% from 88.5% last year.
