MOB JUSTICE: Alleged cable thief killed, another injured in Amandasig

It is alleged that the community caught the cable thieves stripping a substation in Amandasig before sunrise.

Akasia police are investigating a case of murder, assault and attempted murder after an angry mob allegedly killed a suspected cable thief and injured another in Amandasig on Thursday morning.

It is reported that the community caught the two men stripping a substation in Amandasig before sunrise.

The Orchards substation (Amandasig) on Salie Street has been targeted and vandalised by cable thieves on numerous occasions causing blackouts and extended outages for scores of paying customers.

The community decided to form watch groups and patrols to safeguard the substation.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, Akasia police responded swiftly to a complaint of tempering with municipal infrastructure at TP informal settlement in Amandasig.

“Upon arrival, they found a man lying dead on the ground and another [injured both] allegedly assaulted by members of the community,” he said.

Van Dyk said it is alleged that both men were digging cable that runs from Magalies through Rosslyn when they were caught by the angry community.

He said emergency services declared the one man dead and police are investigating a case of murder, as well as attempted murder and assault on the survivor.

The second man was still “arrested for tampering with municipal infrastructure and rushed to George Mukhari hospital for medical treatment”, according to Van Dyk.
