Southdowns College celebrates stellar results

Top achiever Dae Fouché says the school supported them through all 14 years of their school career and became a second home.

Southdowns College learners made their school proud with a 100% pass rate in the 2023 matric exams.

Southdowns College is an independent day and boarding school, taking learners from Grade 0000 to Grade 12.

It prides itself on providing outstanding facilities; and has qualified and dedicated educators with a passion and enthusiasm to fulfil the needs of each learner in a sensitive, caring manner within a balanced programme.

The matrics proved the school’s mission with a 98% bachelor’s degree pass rate.

Dae Fouché, the top achiever at Southdowns College, said they were so nervous the night before the results were released.

“I checked my messages constantly as we got close to the final results, and at about 23:00 on Wednesday I finally got them,” they said.

“Seeing the distinctions was unreal!”

Fouché said they are going on to study applied mathematics at the University of Pretoria.

“Physics was a blast for me at school. Mr Henry really made the class fun, and then Miss Jivan prepared us so well by challenging us and pushing us with a very high standard,” said Fouché.

“Without the passion that they helped grow, I would not have been able to do as well as I did.”

Fouché said the trick to their success was their drive to do a variety of things and not just focus on academics.

“Southdowns has an amazing dance academy, they have an amazing culture, and I got to take part in leadership programmes, the school musical and so much more,” they said.

“On top of all that, I was still excelling academically.

“If there is one thing I am going to miss from Southdowns, it’s the environment, the extracurriculars, and just having fun in this place.

“14 years of my life were spent here. That’s a lot, and I am going to miss it. It’s become a second home.”

The top 10 achievers were:

– Dae Fouche, 85.38%, 6 distinctions

– Boledi Malapane, 85.02%, 7 distinctions

– Mpilenhle Masuku, 84.62%, 6 distinctions

– Miren Michael, 84.23%, 7 distinctions

– Thato Kekana, 83.92%, 5 distinctions

– Shreeya Nana, 83.92%, 7 distinctions

– Iminathi Kunene, 83.86%, 5 distinctions

– Amy Musungaie, 83.15%, 4 distinctions

– Jessica Hart, 83.08%, 5 distinctions

– Lesedi Madikiza, 82.23%, 4 distinctions

The road to stellar results was not smooth for all of Southdowns College learners, but their perseverance and spirit got them through.

Takudzwa Mafara, Southdowns College head boy, had to run for his success on the day of his accounting exams.

Just before reaching the school, he was involved in a car accident.

Mafara was undeterred and decided to take matters into his own hands.

“I couldn’t stand around and wait and potentially miss my exam, so I decided to take a jog up to the school.”

Luckily, he was picked up by a fellow learner along the way.

Despite his fellow learners’ and teachers’ initial worry, Mafara managed to write the two accounting papers set for the day and secured an impressive 90%.

He said he will continue to chase his dreams as he begins his actuarial sciences studies at the University of Cape Town.

Eshan Naidoo also showed that success is out there for those willing to take it.

After a gruelling week with AP maths and IT to end it off, Naidoo felt that something was not right.

After a trip to the emergency room, and a 25-hour wait later doctors realised that his appendix had burst.

“They told me I had to have emergency surgery and that I could have died in just a couple of hours,” he said.

Naidoo came out of surgery at 20:30 on Sunday.

“I knew I had my business paper the next day, so I woke up at 03:00 to brush up on my notes, and wrote business that morning.”

Naidoo, despite what he had been through, managed a cool 87% for business studies and still found the energy to write English, Afrikaans, and physics all from his hospital bed.

“So now I have an excuse if someone asks me why I didn’t get higher,” he joked.
