Sundowns bolster squad with new signings

It is claimed that the Tshwane giants splashed R104-million on refreshing the squad with four new signings to ensure they not only dominate local football but also the continental.

Mamelodi Sundowns reinforced the squad ahead of the second half of the 2023/24 DStv premiership with four new acquisitions in the January transfer window.

Despite the Tshwane giants being at the summit of the table and dominating the league, they have been the most active side in the January window thus far.

It is claimed that the Brazilians could have splashed a sum of R104-million bolstering their squad with four new signings to ensure that they do not only dominate domestically but also conquer continental football.

Sundowns’ financial muscle is not only the key to their huge success but also their scouting department doesn’t just sign any player but talents that will contribute to team success.

The Brazilians currently lead the pack in the DStv premiership standings and are cruising closer to their seventh league title in a row.

However that does not stop them from creating a talent-packed squad.

The new signings come as no surprise but as a continuous legacy to improve and be a force to be reckoned with.

The Tshwane giants bolstered their defence with the signing of talented young defender Zuko Mdunyelwa from Chippa United on a long-term deal.

The 24-year old right-back had racked up 58 appearances for the Chilli Boys since his move from Cape Town City.

Bafana Ba Style continue to scout talent in South America as they added the exciting prospect of Argentina-born Matias Esquivel from Argentine outfit Club Atlético Lanús for a whopping fee of close to R46-million on a four-and-a-half year deal.

The midfielder joins Masandawana as the second arrival of the mid-season window, following Mdunyelwa, who joined in December 2023.

The left-footed playmaker is expected to compliment legendary winger Themba Zwane and also hit the ground running.

Sundowns’ third big signing is South African Tashreeq Matthews, who returns from Europe after his time with Swedish club IK Sirius.

Matthews, scored 10 goals with 10 assists in his final season in Europe, and he is set to help the team reclaim their African glory by winning the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns’ signing of Thembinkosi Lorch on transfer dateline shocked the South African football fraternity.

The 2019 PSL footballer of the season joined the Tshwane giants after dumping Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

This signing was one big statement by the Tshwane giants to show the other clubs that they mean business.

As the Brazilians are in the CAF Champions League knockout phase, these acquisitions are expected to help Sundowns win the competition.
