Tshwane police arrest 368 suspects during Operation Shanela

Two tactical teams and a roadblock team were policing the Garsfontein and Boschkop areas.

Tshwane police arrested 368 people for various crimes during a recent Operation Shanela.

The operation consisted of high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, business compliance inspections and raids on illicit liquor outlets on the first day of the month.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the operation was part of the Tshwane team’s continued commitment to combatting crime in the city.

“Three uniformed groups, comprising of two tactical teams and a roadblock group, were tasked to police the areas of Garsfontein and Boschkop,” Van Dyk said.

“The tactical groups inspected five liquor shops, all found to be non-compliant with the Liquor Act and thousands of litres of liquor was confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal cases.”

Tshwane detectives apprehended 312 suspects, 92 on gender-based violence (GBV) charges, 3 for murder, 1 for attempted murder, 5 for armed robbery and 4 for rape.

Fifty-five undocumented immigrants were detained and will undergo deportation once the legal processes have been finalised and 157 small bags of dagga, 5 240 cigarettes and R1 550 in cash were found abandoned and confiscated.

A total of 25 premises, 2 073 people and 592 vehicles were searched during this operation and 156 Aarto infringement notices were issued to the value of R104 000. A vehicle was impounded for further investigation after discrepancies were discovered.

Role players in the effort included the home affairs, labour and traffic departments, metro police, crime prevention wardens, CPFs and ward councillors as well as SAPS.
