House robber suspect dies in crash in Gezina after high-speed chase

One suspect died of his injuries while three others managed to escape on foot.

One of four suspected house robbers died of his injuries after the getaway vehicle he was travelling in crashed while trying to evade arrest in Gezina on Monday, February 12.

Following the crash, three suspects alighted from the vehicle and escaped on foot, leaving their fellow companion to die from his injuries.

Information was received regarding a group of suspects linked to housebreakings and house robberies around the Monument Park and Waterkloof areas.

According to Proshield Security Company, teams placed in strategic areas noticed the four suspects driving in a white Toyota Hilux bakkie leaving the Waterkloof area.

“The occupants in the white Toyota Hilux noticed the members following them sped away, then a chase ensued,” said the security company.

The high-speed chase continued onto the highway and then proceeded into Villieria.

“Just into Villieria a shoot-out started between the suspects and the members, but the white Toyota Hilux managed to escape the shoot-out,” Proshield said.

It added that as the suspects were trying to evade arrest, the vehicle crashed into a fence and trees on the corner of Nico Smit and Steve Biko streets.

“Three of the suspects managed to get away, leaving one who passed away due to his injuries.”

Multiple housebreaking implements, 9mm firearm cartridges, cellphones, hand gloves, balaclavas and stolen property were found in the bakkie.

The security company said all necessary role players attended the scene and all exhibits were processed by the local criminal record centre.

Police have launched a probe to link the suspects to other cases and to see if the vehicle was used in the commission of other crimes.
