Daspoort Tunnel closed this weekend, says metro police

The tunnel has to be closed for maintenance because of continuous vandalism.

The Tshwane metro has advised motorists and residents to avoid the Daspoort tunnel this weekend.

Earlier this month, Tshwane lamented the continuous vandalism of the tunnel and its rising repairs bill.

It said a meter box in the tunnel was tampered with as motorists complained it was ill-lit, the water gushed along the roadway and steel beams in the pedestrian walkway were stolen.

“Tshwane is under siege from thieves who are targeting our infrastructure. Please be our eyes and ears when you spot vandalism taking place and alert the metro police on 012 358 7095/6.”

Tshwane metro police warned on February 22 that the tunnel would close for maintenance.

“Take note that the Daspoort tunnel in Pretoria West will be closed for maintenance.”

The route will be sealed off on February 25 from 07:30 to 16:00.

Motorists are urged to use alternative routes such as:

– Es’kia Mphahlele Drive
– Van Der Hoff Road
– Staatartillerie Street

The metro police said its members would be deployed in the area to monitor the maintenance and closure.
