Promise of improved local safety with new top brass police

MEC for community safety and liaison Faith Mazibuko promised the community better crime prevention when she recently appointed new divisional and provincial commissioners on March 1.

“These two positions are both critical in ensuring the deployment of capacity and resources in the execution of our mandate,” she said.

Tommy Mthombeni was elevated from acting provincial commissioner to permanent.

“We do believe that working together with other key stakeholders in the justice crime prevention cluster (JCPS), collectively he will turn the tide against crime in Gauteng,”, said Mazibuko

Maropeng Johanna Mamothethi was appointed divisional commissioner responsible for visible operations and policing.

Both been promoted to the rank of lieutenant-general with effect from March 1.

Mthombeni has held several senior positions including that of cluster commander and district commissioner of Tshwane.

He also was station commander of the Jabulani police station.

Mthombeni has a national diploma in police administration, a national higher diploma in policing, and a master’s degree in public administration.

Mamothethi oversaw the destruction of more than 72 000 firearms surrendered to the state or confiscated during anti-crime operations across the country from April 2022.

“Mamothethi brings to the position a wealth of experience in the visible policing environment,” said Mazibuko.

With 28 years’ service, a diploma in policing, a B-Tech degree in policing, and a BCom in human resource management.

“As the head of firearms, liquor and second-hand goods, she was instrumental in reducing the backlog in firearm licensing and firearm amnesty applications by 94%,” said Mazibuko.
