Operation Shanela continues to sweep crime in Tshwane

Among the arrested were 85 people involved in gender-based violence, 11 for murder, 3 for attempted murder, 4 for armed robbery and 5 for rape

Police arrested 384 suspects for different crimes during Operation Shanela in the east and north of Pretoria on March 7.

Three uniformed groups, comprising two tactical teams zoomed their patrols into the crime hotspots, while also focusing on road safety, raiding buildings and other illicit liquor outlets in Brooklyn and Kameeldrift.

The operations were executed with the help of various law enforcement agencies, including the departments of home affairs, labour, Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police and crime prevention wardens.

Police spokesperson Johan van Dyk said the suspects were arrested for a wide array of crimes including possession of drugs, selling liquor without a licence, drunk driving, drinking in public and possession of illicit cigarettes.

He said six suspects were arrested for possession of drugs.

“One person found himself behind bars for the possession of 62 000 illicit cigarettes, while another was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, one for drinking in public and two for assault.”

Van Dyk said 56 undocumented foreigners and two employers were arrested. The undocumented immigrants were detained and will undergo deportation once the legal processes have been finalised with two persons for employing them.

“Among the arrested were 85 people involved in gender-based violence, 11 for murder, 3 for attempted murder, 4 for armed robbery and 5 for rape,” said Van Dyk.

During the operation, alcohol was seized, and illegal shebeens were given warnings.

“The tactical groups inspected 15 liquor premises with two not being compliant with the Liquor Act. The liquor was confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal cases,” said Van Dyk.

According to Van Dyk, the labour department examined 10 businesses and subsequently issued three contravention and improvement notices.

“Throughout the operation, 482 people, 258 vehicles and 10 premises were searched and 93 Aarto infringement notices totalling R46 250 were issued,” said Van Dyk.
