Mamelodi police arrest three men for possession of unlicensed firearm and bribery

‘Bribery is a criminal offence that is punishable by law,” emphasises police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni.

The vigilance of the Mamelodi East police has led to the arrest of three men for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as bribery.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said two of the men were arrested while the police were conducting crime prevention duties on Monday.

She said later that day, another suspect came to the police station and initiated a bribe of R10 000 for the release of the two suspects.

“The suspect was immediately arrested on the spot for bribery. All three will appear before court soon,” said Nevhuhulwi.

In another incident, a SAPS highway patrol team, the Springs and Ekurhuleni K9 units and their Ekurhuleni Metro counterparts arrested five suspects and seized a firearm with a filed-off serial number, ammunition, false number plates and housebreaking equipment.

Nevhuhulwi said on March 11, the team operationalised information about alleged business robbers around Ekurhuleni.

“The members strategically placed themselves, and the suspected vehicles were spotted. An attempt was made to stop the vehicles but they sped off, leading to a chase,” she said.

The two vehicles were eventually cornered in the Boksburg CBD. Five suspects were arrested, and further investigations will be conducted to establish if they were involved in other crimes.

Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni applauded the officers for their commitment to fighting crime in the province, especially for clamping down on corruption and exposing those who attempt to bribe police.

“The positive attitude, honesty and integrity displayed by members through upholding and enforcing the law as mandated by the Constitution of the country is commendable,” said Mthombeni.

He urged the public to become whistleblowers and take part in putting an end to corruption.

Mthombeni stressed that bribery is a criminal offence punishable by law.
