Tshwane health department honours outstanding clinics at awards ceremony

The metro’s primary healthcare clinics retain their ideal clinic status and meet stringent criteria regarding infrastructure, staff, medicine and supplies, and adherence to clinical policies and guidelines, says MMC for Health, Rina Marx.

The Tshwane metro health department held its Service Excellence Awards ceremony on March 1 to honour the exceptional contributions of its primary clinics.

The awards covered a range of categories, aimed at celebrating those clinics that have demonstrated excellence in the department.

According to MMC for Health Rina Marx, the ceremony was a crucial opportunity to recognise and commend the clinics’ hard work.

Marx emphasised the importance of changing the narrative around public health and addressing negative perceptions.

“I used the opportunity to convey to those in attendance that this event was being hosted at a time when the public health sector is under severe scrutiny.”

She added that the metro has 24 primary healthcare (PHC) clinics under its administration, and they have all retained their ideal clinic status.

This follows peer review assessments conducted in September 2023, where the role players included the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) Tshwane District and quality assurance teams.

“The national health departmental guidelines state that the purpose of a health facility is to promote health and to prevent illness and further complications through early detection, treatment, and appropriate referral,” she said.

Marx stressed that a clinic should function optimally, requiring a combination of elements to be present to render it an ideal clinic.

“The metro’s primary healthcare clinics retained their ideal clinic status and met stringent criteria regarding infrastructure, staff, medicine and supplies, and adherence to clinical policies and guidelines,” she said.

Award recipients included:

– Best clinic dispensary: Olievenhoutbosch

– Best primary healthcare clinic: Karenpark Clinic

– Best municipal health services (MHS) region: Region 3.

Marx also highlighted the metro’s achievements in maintaining a high standard of healthcare services and its efforts to bring health services closer to communities.

“I would like to congratulate all the nominees and award recipients and call on them to mentor their colleagues and empower them through best practices,” she said.

The MEC commended the dedication and commitment of the department’s primary clinics, despite their financial and staffing constraints.
