Grandmother arrested for burying babies in shallow grave

A Hammanskraal grandmother was recently arrested for burying two babies in a shallow grave. Here is the latest.

Police have arrested a Hammanskraal’s grandmother for burying two babies in a shallow grave.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the police in Temba responded to concealment of the birth incident at a house in Unit 7 following a visit by the Department of Health’s Home-Based Care officials on 15 March 2024.

“It is reported that the officials were alerted by community members that a woman has given birth at home and that she did not register the baby with the Department of Home Affairs.”

Muridili said a preliminary investigation revealed that the 32-year-old woman had actually given birth to triplets on 8 March 2024.

It is reported that one of the babies was stillborn, while the other one died after two days.

“Upon giving birth, the 32-year-old woman, allegedly with assistance from her 51-year-old mother, buried the stillborn baby in a shallow grave in their yard. Two days later, the second baby died, and he was also buried in a shallow grave.”

She furthermore said the police’s Crime Scene Investigation team was called to the scene on 16 March 2024.

“The remains of the two babies, a boy and a girl, were exhumed and taken to the government mortuary.”

The woman and her remaining baby girl have been taken to hospital for medical attention.

“Her 51-year-old mother has been taken into custody to face possible charges of defeating the ends of justice. The woman will also face charges of concealment of birth as well as defeating the ends of justice.”

According to Muridili, a postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
