Steve Biko gets new CEO

Dr Lehlohonolo Majake has been the acting CEO at Steve Biko for the past 12 months following the resignation of her predecessor.

Dr Lehlohonolo Majake will take the reins as the new CEO of Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria on April 1.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, congratulated the newly appointed CEOs of three academic hospitals in Gauteng.

The other new CEOs are Dr Nthabiseng Makgana (Chris Hani Baragwanath in Johannesburg) and Dr Fhatuwani Mbara (Dr George Mukhari in Ga-Rankuwa).

“I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to Dr Nthabiseng Makgana, Dr Lehlohonolo Majake and Dr Fhatuwani Mbara for their appointments to serve in our academic hospitals. These positions carry a great responsibility in ensuring the delivery of excellent healthcare services to the people of Gauteng,” said Nkomo-Ralehoko.

“As we ready ourselves for the implementation of the NHI, it is imperative that we have capable leaders at the helm of our academic hospitals. Their expertise and strategic vision will play a vital role in advancing our healthcare system, promoting equity, and improving access to quality healthcare services for all.”

Steve Biko has been in the spotlight recently for opening the first nuclear research facility on the continent and five nurses being suspended pending negligence investigations that led to a patient’s death. The CEO says she’s ready to serve her community as best she can.

“I am humbled to officially step into the CEO role and responsibility after 12 months. As part of providing the best service to the community of Gauteng, some areas will form part of my priority, such as relationship management with internal and external staff through providing the best pleasant care to all. Ensuring adequate infrastructure and equipment, maintaining the cleanliness of the hospital and employee well-being,” Dr Majake said.

Crucial time of the appointment as the department prepares for the National Health Insurance (NHI).

The appointment of these CEOs comes at a crucial time as the department prepares for the National Health Insurance (NHI). MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko further highlighted the significance of capable leaders in achieving the goals set by the NHI.

“My expectation is to ensure the hospital fulfils the mandate of the MEC by providing the best care to South Africa and to be the hospital of choice to patients and staff.

“I will also engage with the community about NHI,” Dr Majake said.
