Hundreds arrested during Easter weekend

The team conducted comprehensive law enforcement activities throughout Tshwane to effectively combat crime over the Easter weekend.

Operation Shanela yielded positive results as police arrested 598 suspects for various crimes in the Akasia policing area, north of Pretoria during the Easter weekend.

The team continued their zero tolerance on crime in Tshwane by multidisciplinary crime-combatting reaction teams.

The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of stolen vehicles, armed robbery, public drinking, assault and housebreaking.

Police made the operation a success with the help of other stakeholders including Tshwane metro police, CPFs, crime prevention wardens, Gauteng traffic and ward councillors.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said that the operation entailed high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections, and raids on illicit liquor outlets.

Van Dyk said that two suspects were arrested for murder.

“One was arrested for possession of 24 plastic bags of dagga,” he said.

Another operation nabbed 251 suspects – 73 for gender-based violence, two for armed robbery, and two for rape.

The four uniformed groups comprising two tactical teams and two roadblock groups inspected nine liquor outlets and found three non-compliant with the Liquor Act.

“Liquor was confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal cases,” said Van Dyk.

Van Dyk said 43 undocumented foreigners were detained and will undergo deportation once the legal processes have been finalised.

“Seven people were arrested for public drinking, and 13 Aarto infringement fines issued.”
