Here is what we know about the drowning of the learners

The drowning of two learners at a discipline camp in Centurion has left many shocked. Here is what we know about the tragic drownings.

The two learners drowned during a discipline camp at Rock Falls Adventure Ranch in Centurion on Monday afternoon.

Here is what we know thus far about the tragic drownings: 

  • Both boys, aged 13 and 16, are learners of the Daveyton Skills School in Benoni. 
  • The boys were attending a discipline camp by a non-governmental organisation called the Rising Stars Generation. 
  • It is believed the discipline camp is not organised of affiliated with the school. 
  • The incident happened during a discipline camp at Rock Falls Adventure Ranch in Centurion. 
  • One of the learners suddenly ran towards a nearby river close to the campsite entrance on Monday. A second learner followed in an attempt to bring him back. 
  • Mabona said it is further alleged that the learner who ran off jumped into the river, prompting the second learner to try and rescue him.
  • Both boys drowned and were declared dead on the scene. 
  • Circumstances leading to the drowning incident remain a subject of investigation by the SAPS.
  • Psycho-Social Support Unit will be dispatched to the school to provide necessary trauma support and counselling.
  • Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane will visit Daveyton Skills School in Benoni on Wednesday. 
  • The purpose of the visit is to ascertain more details about the circumstances which led to this tragic incident in order to determine a way forward. 
  • The names of the two boys have not yet been made public.
