Manhunt launched after robbers bomb safes, shoot victim at petrol station

It is alleged that a number of suspects entered a filling station at Mamelodi East and set up explosives, which damaged the drop-safe and the property.

Gauteng police are on the lookout for a gang of suspects after a 30-year-old man was fatally wounded during a business robbery in Mamelodi East in the early hours of Monday, April 16.

Residents neighbouring the targeted petrol stations in Mamelodi East and West were awakened by loud bangs.

Several suspects allegedly entered the two filling stations adjacent to each other and set off explosives that damaged the safes and property.

Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the suspects also fired shots, and a petrol attendant was injured and later died.

She said the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“In a separate incident on the same day in Mamelodi West, it was reported that five armed men arrived at another filling station; one of them walked inside, instructing the cashier to go outside; she later heard a loud bang from the shop,” said Sibeko.

The suspects fled the scene in a Toyota Quantum, which they hijacked from a customer.

Sibeko said the vehicle was later recovered.

No arrest has been made yet, and police are investigating a case of murder, business robberies and damage to state property.

Police pleaded with the public to bring any information they may have to the authorities on 08600 10111 or 10111.
