Hunt for three suspects after fatal shooting of taxi driver

Police are investigating the murder of a man who was killed at Phomolong taxi rank in Atteridgeville on Saturday afternoon.

Police are hunting three suspects after a man was shot and killed at Phomolong taxi rank in Atteridgeville on Saturday afternoon.

No arrests have yet been made, as they are still investigating the murder.

The SAPS responded to reports of the shooting at approximately 13:09, where upon arrival, officers discovered a man’s lifeless body lying at the entrance of the taxi rank.

Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the SAPS reported that an eyewitness claimed the victim was a taxi driver.

“The witness revealed that the deceased was driving the taxi with another driver, whose name remains unknown.”

He said the witness explained that, as the taxi was passing by the taxi rank, the victim recognised someone at the entrance and decided to stop the vehicle.

“The witness said the victim asked the other driver to take over while he went to meet the individual.”

According to Van Dyk, the witness explained that the driver had agreed and proceeded to stop the taxi further down the street to offload passengers.

He said the witness and other passengers saw three unknown men standing next to the victim and firing bullets at him while he was lying defenceless on the ground.

“The three individuals fled the scene in a white vehicle that the witness described as a Toyota Tazz.”

He said about nine cartridges were found at the scene.
