Motorist adds ‘bribery’ to criminal woes
A man arrested for possession an unlicensed firearm near Laudium, allegedly offered police a R1 000 bribe.
A man had additional charges added to his arrest sheet when he attempted to bribe police officers on the R55 near Laudium on Tuesday, April 30.
The man was pulled over near the intersection of Second Avenue and the R55 around 19:30.
Tshwane SAPS spokesperson Warrant-Officer Johan van Dyk said Tshwane district police were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious blue BMW with no number plates.
“The vehicle was subsequently pulled over on the corner of R55 and Second Avenue in Laudium for a routine search – the driver and vehicle were subjected to search procedures,” said Van Dyk.
He said police found a Z88 pistol with a serial number filed off and a magazine with ten 9mm bullets in the driver’s possession.

“The driver failed to provide a satisfactory explanation or valid firearm licence,” said Van Dyk.
“Police informed him that he was under arrest for possession of an unlicensed firearm.”
The man then allegedly attempted to bribe police officers.
“The suspect offered a sum of R1 000 to the officers in exchange for release.”
Van Dyk said the officers promptly declined and added bribery charges against the suspect.
“The money offered was confiscated and subsequently submitted as evidence.”
He said that the firearm would be tested for involvement in other criminal activity.
“Brigadier Samuel Thine, the acting district commissioner of Tshwane, extends his commendation to the officers involved for their diligence and commitment in effecting this arrest,” he said.
