UPDATE: Tshwane ward committee nominations closing soon
The ward committees are set to operate over the last two weekends in June.
The office of the Speaker has announced that the ward committee nomination process will officially close on May 3.
This process has been running since April 9 and has allowed residents and interested stakeholders to nominate candidates who can bring about positive change in their respective wards.
Tshwane Council Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana said municipalities are required by law to establish ward committees to promote community participation in municipal affairs.
Ndzwanana said the ward committees play a crucial role in identifying and addressing the needs and challenges faced by local communities.
He said they play an important role in distributing information about municipal activities and building a positive relationship between the community and the municipality.
“As per the by-law, all nominations will be verified by the Independent Electoral Management Body (IEMB) and the office of the Speaker,” he said.
He added that the final list of candidates will be communicated on May 24, and an appeal period will be open until May 31.
“Residents are responsible for electing representatives who will work towards achieving their goals,” he said.
The ward committees will operate on two consecutive weekends as follows:
Regions 1 and 6:
– On Sunday, June 30.
Regions 2 and 4:
– On Sunday, June 23.
Regions 3 and 7:
– On Saturday, June 29.
Region 5:
– On Saturday, June 22.
