Dorandia maintenance teams clear hazardous trees across 3 sites
Community members in Ward 2 welcome proactive safety pruning after overhanging boughs threatened local overhead electricity cables.
Dorandia residents recently saw maintenance work carried out at three Ward 2 locations to tackle hazardous trees and keep neighbourhood streets safe.
The work included removing a broken tree branch hanging over an electrical cable on Punctata Street, as well as pruning at two other locations.
According to Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer, maintenance teams attended to the safety concern on Punctata Street.
Pruning was also completed at Fay Street and at the corner of Veldkornet Roos and Pagel streets.
While tree maintenance is often viewed as routine neighbourhood upkeep, overhanging and damaged branches can pose risks to electrical infrastructure, motorists, pedestrians and nearby properties, particularly during periods of strong winds and adverse weather.
Meyer tackles hazard prevention
Meyer said the work formed part of ongoing efforts to keep Ward 2 safe and well-maintained.
”Keeping our neighbourhoods safe requires attention to the everyday issues that can easily be overlooked. Removing the broken branch in Punctata Street was particularly important because it sat above an electrical cable.
”We appreciate the teams who attended to these locations and helped address the concerns,” he said.
Dorandia resident Thabang Bhengu said addressing potentially dangerous branches was important because residents should not have to wait for an incident before maintenance concerns receive attention.
”It is encouraging to see these issues being attended to. A broken branch hanging over an electrical cable is something that should be taken seriously. If it comes down during bad weather, it could cause damage or put people at risk. Regular inspections and maintenance are important,” said Bhengu.
Community calls for ongoing vigilance
Fellow resident Michelle Ndou said maintaining trees in residential streets should remain a priority, particularly where branches could interfere with electricity infrastructure or affect people using public spaces.
”People sometimes only notice tree maintenance when there is already a problem. It is better to deal with broken or overhanging branches before they cause an accident or damage. We would like to see this kind of attention continue across Dorandia and other parts of the ward,” said Ndou.
The three locations form part of the latest maintenance update shared by Meyer, who thanked the municipal teams involved for attending to the reported issues.
He said the work also highlights the importance of identifying potential hazards before they develop into more serious safety concerns.
Meyer reiterated his commitment to addressing community concerns through ongoing maintenance interventions, saying the aim was to improve neighbourhood conditions one issue at a time.
