Tshwane sends agents to ensure billing info accuracy

The waste bin audit will ensure that the city bills correctly.

The Tshwane metro’s waste management data verification project is currently underway in regions 1, 2, 4 and 6 as field agents are deployed to ensure billing for this service is accurate.

Environment and Agriculture MMC Ziyanda Zwane joined the agents in Groenkloof recently to assess the problem for himself.

He said verification aims to ensure that the number and types of waste bins clients have on the ground is consistent with the information the metro keeps for billing.

He added that billing for waste services is directly linked to the number of bins the client keeps, because it has been noted that over time conditions on the ground change.

“Usually the metro is not informed of these changes, thus leading to discrepancies between what is physically on the ground and what is billing records.”

To correct this, Zwane said it is imperative that a physical audit is carried out.

He said the system operates as follows:

– Consumers must pay the applicable tariff per waste bin the metro provides

– Only bins provided by the metro and marked as such will be serviced and billed for

– Billing is directly linked to the number and type of waste bin.

“Field agents will therefore be deployed to carry out the audit. They are currently in regions 4 and 6 and can be identified by ID cards, which bear the Tshwane logo and agent full name and ID number.”

Customers in regions 1, 2, 4 and 6 are advised to expect field agents on the scheduled waste collection day.

Zwane said the metro collects waste daily as per the schedules that have been in place for a number of years.

“We are not amending the existing schedules during this project, the agents will work in line with the existing collection schedules,” he said.

Residents can e-mail the metro at wastemanagement@tshwane.gov.za for their waste collection schedule.
