R440 bribe ends up with man behind bars
Police officers found 47 plastic bags and five boxes with Somalian drugs (Miray drugs) to the estimated value R20 000 in the boot of the suspect’s car.
A 43-year-old man had his car confiscated and transported to Pretoria West SAPS vehicle impound after the Tshwane Flying Squad nabbed him when he attempted to bribe a police officer with R440 last week.
The man was found in possession of drugs on Tuesday, May 14 and was arrested on the N1 intersection towards the N4 south of Silverton east of Pretoria, according to police.
Flying Squad spokesperson Sergeant Alfred Legodi said the man was arrested during a stop-and-search operation.
Legodi said the man was travelling from Limpopo in a silver Nissan Tiida.
“The officers found 47 bags of Miray (Somalian) drugs with an estimated value of R20 000. These drugs are the type that is chewed and a stimulant,” Legodi said.
He said after being arrested, the man took out R440 and tried to give it to the officers so they could let him go.
“However the law-abiding officers instead arrested him and read him his rights while adding a charge of attempting to bribe an officer of the law.”
According to Legodi, the man was taken to Silverton, where he was detained.
“His car was confiscated and transported to Pretoria West SAPS vehicle impound and it has an estimated value of R40 000.”
In another incident, in July last year, the Flying Squad arrested a 29-year-old man for attempting to bribe a police officer with R400.
According to Legodi, the money was meant for the release of the man’s employee, who was caught with 34 packets of marijuana.
The suspect’s worker was arrested following a tip-off, according to Legodi. The 21-year-old worker was found dealing dagga and subsequently arrested.
Legodi said 40 minutes later, the man followed the police to the station, seeking to free his worker.
“He had the nerve to drive to the police station and bribe an officer to free his worker.”
The man was arrested for bribing an officer of the law and detained at the Hammanskraal police station.
Legodi said the 21-year-old suspect was charged with possession of and dealing dagga and the 29-year-old man for dealing in drugs as well as bribery.
Legodi urged the public to blow the whistle on crime.
