Ambulance spiked en route to an emergency call

The emergency vehicle was targeted on the N4 before the R80 turnoff near Wonderpark.

Highway spiking criminals continue to target more than just normal vehicles on the R80 in the north of Pretoria.

This comes after one of ER24’s ambulances was involved in a spiking incident on the N4 before the R80 turnoff in the direction of Soshanguve on Saturday, May 11 at about 23:00.

According to ER24 spokesperson Ineke van Huyssteen, the ambulance was occupied by two paramedics who were en route to a call.

“Fortunately, no injuries were sustained but two of the ambulance tyres were severely damaged and another ER24 ambulance was dispatched to assist with the call,” said Van Huyssteen.

Rekord recently reported that a police officer was injured on Thursday, May 9, when a rock was thrown off the bridge onto the vehicle while they were patrolling the R80.

Another police vehicle was targeted by the highway spiking gang on the N1 between the Murrayhill and Hammanskraal tollgates last week.

There have been numerous tyre spiking crimes on the R80.

A multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation on May 11, resulted in the arrest of 11 suspects who allegedly were involved in highway spiking and online shopping robberies.

One suspect was shot and killed.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the police had received information on the whereabouts of suspects allegedly responsible for road spiking incidents on the N1, N4 and R80.

Tips for motorists when involved in a spiking incident:

-Reduce speed, but don’t stop. Try to keep going as much as possible. Your life is more important than the vehicle.

-Try to reach a safe spot or a spot with lighting.

-Share your location on the spiking groups or any security group or forum.

-Give a brief description via a voice note.

-Keep updating briefly via voice notes.

-If your car can’t go further, leave everything but your phone and run and hide somewhere, make sure to mute your phone and dim your screen, try to keep moving if possible.

-If you do get caught, lie down with arms spread out and all your possessions away from your body, and don’t engage with the suspects.
