Relocation of Mams flood victims to Pienaarspoort land by November – MMC

The metro has received a parcel of land in Pienaarspoort from provincial government, and all the affected families will be relocated there.

Tshwane MMC for Human Settlements, Councillor Ofentse Madzebatela and deputy mayor, Councillor Nasiphi Moya visited the 60 families that are victims of the infamous Mamelodi floods on Tuesday night.

The families were housed in the Nelmapius Hall after their homes were washed away by the flood to await relocation.

Madzebatela said the purpose of the visit was to discuss and determine what needs to be done to fast-track the vacation of the hall, so the community can use it for its intended purpose.

“We also outlined the relocation plans and the progress that has been made to date,” said Madzebatela.

He said earlier this year, an assessment was conducted and it was found that all, except nine families, still have structures in the informal settlement.

An agreement was reached with the community leaders that those with structures would go back to their shacks and the relocations would resume according to the original shack markings.

The meeting addressed concerns by the nine families who have now agreed to vacate the hall with the assistance of the metro.

He said the metro received a parcel of land in Pienaarspoort from the provincial government, and all the affected families would be relocated there.

Relocations will resume once the rehabilitation of the land in Pienaarspoort, which has been budgeted for, is completed.

The envisaged date for the relocation is November this year.

“We remain committed to these relocations as we believe that everyone deserves to live in safe and liveable environments,” he added.

Madzebatela urged communities to stop illegally invading land and building structures on land earmarked for development by the metro.
