Expect no water in parts of Pretoria as large-scale maintenance set from July 15

Several areas in Pretoria might have no water for about four days due to large-scale maintenance on water infrastructure in Gauteng.

The Tshwane metro announced that the water utility, Rand Water is set to resume its comprehensive maintenance programme from July 15, 19, and 26, which is expected to conclude on July 29 for the Palmiet and Mapleton systems that supply water to the city.

Rand Water informed the metro last month about the maintenance programme that started on June 22 for its infrastructures across municipalities in Gauteng.

It said the planned maintenance is aimed at preserving the lifespan of its infrastructure and improving its reliability during the higher summer demand.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the work will involve the replacement of Rand Water’s bulk water meters that supply various reservoirs in the city.

“The maintenance programme that was done in the city on the Palmiet and Mapleton systems commenced on July 1 and 5, respectively, was successful and did not lead to any water supply interruption,” said Bokaba.

He said the affected reservoirs would be filled before the start of the maintenance work, where possible, during the upkeep period.

“However, water supply may be interrupted, and residents are therefore urged to use water sparingly,” he said.

Bokaba said that the metro would provide water through tankers to the affected areas.

“The city apologises for the inconvenience that may be encountered as a result of the maintenance programme,” said Bokaba.

Residents are urged to adhere to the following water conservation measures during this period:

– Do not water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 06:00 and 18:00.

– Do not wash vehicles with hosepipes.

– Do not fill swimming pools.

– Instal a low-flow shower head and tap aerators where possible.

– Use a dual-flush toilet cistern.

– Plant indigenous or drought-resistant shrubs in the garden.

– Use a broom instead of a hosepipe when cleaning driveways or patios.

– Collect rainwater to reuse in the garden or wash the car.

– Cover the swimming pool to reduce water evaporation.

– Take a short shower rather than a bath.

– Close a running tap while brushing teeth or shaving.

– Regularly check toilets and taps for leaks.

Tshwane reservoirs, which are supplied by Rand Water’s Palmiet System, will be affected on the following dates:

– On July 15, the system will be pumping at 68% for two days.

– On July 29, the system will be pumping at 76%.

– On July 26, the system will not be pumping for three days
