Twelve Pretoria High School learners found not guilty after racism allegations

The school said on Friday that all twelve learners have been found not guilty on all charges. Here is the latest.

All twelve Pretoria High School for Girls learners have been found not guilty on all charges.

In a statement on Friday, the school said a 3-person panel of the SGB conducted the disciplinary hearings as per regulations.

“The proceedings have been finalised, and all twelve learners have been found not guilty on all charges. This also includes their prefect status.”

This comes after an investigation was launched to probe all the allegations, especially against school employees last month.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona previously said according to information at their disposal, on Thursday, July 18, the school alerted the Tshwane South District about a planned protest by a group of learners scheduled for Friday, July 19.

“This was triggered by alleged racial connotations, micro-aggressions, and complaints about black learners, which were ventilated through a WhatsApp Group comprised of white learners.”

The school also said the proceedings are recorded in a formal report that has been handed over to the school governing body.

“We believe that this process has been conducted fairly and with transparency.”

Mabona, on Friday, told the media that they were disappointed with the manner in which the school treated them.

“They know that this matter has been in the public space and we dont even have an official report on the outcome of the disciplinary hearings.”

Meanwhile, the school has said they are grateful for the support and understanding during this challenging time.

“Coming out of this process, there are lessons for all of us. Let us continue to work together to create an environment where teaching can continue and every learner feels valued and empowered to succeed.

“As we move forward from this chapter, we express our gratitude for your support and understanding during this challenging time. We remain dedicated to fostering a safe and nurturing environment for all our learners and staff and will continue to uphold the values that define our school community.”
